Why You Should Never Spot Fix Tiles

Why You Should Never Spot Fix Tiles

When it comes to laying tiles—whether on a floor, wall, or external cladding—how they’re fixed is just as important as the tiles themselves. One shortcut we still see far too often in the industry is “spot fixing”. It might look faster, it might feel easier, but it’s a guaranteed way to compromise the strength, safety, and longevity of your installation.

What is Spot Fixing?

Spot fixing is when adhesive is applied in a few blobs or “spots” on the back of the tile, instead of spreading it evenly across the entire surface. The tile is then pressed into place, leaving large gaps underneath without adhesive coverage.

Why It’s a Problem

  1. Poor Adhesion
Without full coverage, tiles rely on a few small points for grip. Over time, movement, foot traffic, or even changes in temperature can cause those points to fail.
  2. Hollow Spots & Cracking
The empty gaps under spot-fixed tiles become weak points. These areas are prone to cracking under pressure and will often sound hollow when tapped—a telltale sign of poor installation.
  3. Water Ingress
In bathrooms, kitchens, outdoors, or around pools, gaps in adhesive are an open invitation for water to get behind your tiles. This can lead to mould, staining, and costly structural damage.
  4. Non-Compliance With Standards
Australian Standards require a minimum of 90% adhesive coverage for internal dry areas, and even more for wet or external environments. Spot fixing doesn’t come close to meeting these requirements and will void any product warranties.

The Correct Way to Lay Tiles

A professional tiler will:

  • Prepare the substrate so it’s clean, dry, and level.
  • Use the right adhesive for the tile type and environment.
  • Apply adhesive evenly using a notched trowel.
  • Back-butter (apply adhesive to the back of the tile) when necessary to achieve full coverage.

Our Promise at AUSSIETECTURE

We take pride in not just the quality of our stone products, but in ensuring they’re installed to last a lifetime. Spot fixing might save minutes on the day, but it will cost you in the long run. We only recommend working with qualified, experienced installers who understand proper fixing techniques.

Bottom line: Spot fixing isn’t just a bad habit—it’s a shortcut to failure. If you’re investing in premium stone, make sure it’s laid with the care and skill it deserves.
